The quaint village Rettenberg is located between the Grünten and the Rottachberg. Several hiking trails lead us from the village up to the woody mountain ridge of the Rottachberg. There is a good network of well developed hiking paths in that landscape of beautiful mixed forests and lush green pastures. From the Falkenstein, the highest point of the Rottachberg, we are able to enjoy a gorgeous view of the valley Illertal. Climbing down, it is worth to take a break at the viewing pavillon at the Gebhardshöhe. The panorama is beautiful, we see the Grünten, the Oberstdorfer Berge and the Hörnergruppe and as far as the Mittag.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the parking area we follow the Kranzegger Straße west and turn behind a restaurant on the street "An der Halde". At the next crossing we take a left and follow the road Falkensteinweg until we reach the end of the village. From there a broader way leads upwards. Soon we reach a T-junction where we turn right. We cross a slope above Retternberg, where we can enjoy a beautiful view. Then we continue on paths which are partly poorly recognizable and lead through forests and meadows uphill, following the signage to the Falkenstein. By climbing up we stay at the eastern side of the ridge the whole time. We come across a broad paved road at the woodland egde, turn left, cross the meadow and climb up through the forest until we reach the ridge. From there we continue to the summit of the Falkenstein (1115 m). Back at the junction we turn right. A small path leads us downhill at the westside of the ridge, until we come across a wide forest road. We follow it to the left side until we reach the woodland edge. On the right a small path leads us now to the Gebhardshöhe, which we recognize from afar due to the pavillon (viewing point). At a house which is slightly hidden in the forest we reach a broader way. We follow it back to Rettenberg (807 m).
