This hike is one of the most beautiful tours in the Allgaeu and crosses the first three summits of the Nagelfluh range: Mittag, Bärenköpfle and Steineberg.

The entire tour takes you over the Nagelfluh range between Hochgrat and Mittag. It is regarded as one of the region's most popular and beautiful ridge hikes and takes you over all seven Nagelfluh summits in just as many hours. The shorter version takes you from the peak of the Mittag via Bärenköpfle zum Steineberg. If you  want you can take the Mittag lift to the starting point of the tour. The Mittag is the «Hausberg» (local mountain) of Immenstadt.

The diverse tour is family-friendly and can be managed by anybody. You walk over roots and climb up to the rocky peak of the Steineberg. There is an alternative trail for experienced hikers ("nur für Geübte") with a via ferrata and a 17 m high iron ladder. The trail offers all kind of beautiful viewpoints. But if you are not free of giddiness, the main path is much easier and less demanding. Once you have made it to the top, the summit cross provides the perfect resting point and a spectacular view over the main ridge of the Allgaeu mountains.

On the way, you take a right turn at the Bärenköpfle and leave the main road to make a quick detour to the Alpine Pasture "Sennalpe Oberberg", where you have the chance to enjoy a traditional snack. Afterwards, you walk up to the top station of the Mittagbahn.

Author’s recommendation

Visit the Alpine Pasture "Sennalpe Oberberg". The cheese that is produced by the Beck family has been awarded with prizes numerous times.

Turn-by-turn directions

You easily get to the peak of Immenstadt's local mountain Mittag. From here, we take the broad hiking path to the Bärenköpfle, the second peak of the Nagelfluhkette. We continue on a more narrow trail over roots and wooden steps and walk alongside the ridge. As soon as we see the peak of the Steineberg we take a right turn on a track marked "only for experienced hikers" ("nur für Geübte"). A small tightrope secured via ferrata takes you to a small mountain saddle just beneath the peak. We take the main path and climb up a 17 m high iron ladder. Once you reach the top of the mountain, you get to chance enjoy the beautiful sight of the Allgaeu mountains.

You descend via the track towards the Stuiben, the next summit of the Nagelfluhkette. We take a right turn at the next crossing and follow the main path underneath the scarp back to the ladder. We follow the serpentines down to the track that we know from the ascent back to the Bärenköpfle. We take a right turn at a cross and follow the way to the Sennalpe Oberberg. We continue on the road up to the top station of the Mittagbahn.
